Program Postponed Until Further Notice

In the meantime, we strongly encourage residents to check their smoke detectors and consider upgrading to dual sensor smoke detectors with a 10 year sealed battery for enhanced safety. These detectors provide protection against both flaming and smoldering fires, ensuring your home is well-protected.

Smoke Detector Program

On the first Wednesday of each month, Carrollton Fire Rescue targets about 75 homes in a single low income or older neighborhood to go door to door offering free smoke detector checks. If we find non functioning detectors, we give and install new detectors for free. We have found that low income or older homes are the most likely to have old or no smoke detectors at all!

When searching for a new smoke detector for your home, we use and recommend dual sensor smoke detectors with a 10 year sealed battery. These have a ionization sensor that detects flaming fires, such as grease or wastebasket fires, and a photoelectric sensor that detects smoldering fires, such as when a lit cigarette ignites clothing or upholstery. The sealed battery provides continuous power without the need for changing out with a new 9 volt.

Even with the sealed battery, we still recommend that every smoke detector is checked twice a year. The smoke detector themselves have an average life span of 10 years, but failures before and after the 10 year mark are possible.
