Everyone appreciates the beauty and usability of a remodeled home, and everyone appreciates a ‘good neighbor’ who completes their projects with a minimum of disruption to the neighborhood. Part of successfully completing a remodel or renovation project includes proper disposal of construction waste. Whether you’re a homeowner tackling a weekend project yourself or employing a contractor to complete the job for you, please keep the following in mind:
Know when to get a City permit. Permits are required when there is
new construction to a building, when a building is to be remodeled, renovated or enlarged, or with some repair work. New work consists of any new construction, commercial or residential, from vacant ground to a completed new structure.
A fence permit is required for any new fence over 20 feet in length. Maintenance of fences by replacing some of the fence boards or by replacing boards and posts up to 20 feet in length does not require a permit. Projects such as painting, carpeting, wallpapering, replacing or adding cabinets, and trim work are considered cosmetic and do not require a permit. Contact
Building Inspection at 972-466-3225 for assistance concerning your specific project.
Manage
your trash for efficient collection. Contractors performing construction work are responsible for removal and disposal of all construction debris. They may not place it out for collection by Allied Waste Services. A homeowner performing the construction work themselves may place material at the curb for collection no sooner than 6 p.m. the day before their scheduled trash pickup. For safe and efficient collection, place bulk waste in boxes weighing 50 pounds or less. For multi-day projects, consider renting a roll-off dumpster. Check yellow pages under ‘dumpster rental’ for providers.
Appliances such as stoves and water heaters may be collected curbside by
Allied Waste Services on customers’ regular collection day. There is no additional charge, and customers do not need to call for collection. Refrigerant-using appliances must be confirmed emptied of the chemical by a certified professional. Check yellow pages listings under ‘refrigerant service’ for providers.
Household hazardous wastes, such as aerosol sprays and fluorescent light tubes, will not be collected with regular trash pick-up. Carrollton residents may take household hazardous waste to the
Home Chemical Collection Center (11234 Plano Road, approximately 1 mile north of IH-635 between Miller Road and Forest Lane in Dallas). This is a free service for residents of Carrollton and other participating cities; provide a Texas drivers license and a utility bill as proof of residency. For hours of operation call 214-553-1765.
