Carrollton, Texas – A new park is on its way in Carrollton as demolition begins to revamp the beloved Kids Corral at Mary Heads Carter Park (2320 Heads Lane). Located near the intersection of Kelly Boulevard and Keller Springs Road, this Carrollton treasure was built by a large community effort in 1991. While the park has brought enjoyment to both residents and non-residents alike for over 20 years, wear and tear has taken its toll and the wooden structure has been a struggle to maintain. The City is excited to bring in challenging, interactive, and fun playground features. This new amenity will have many accessible pieces of equipment and areas of play, and will sit on a brand new synthetic surface that will sprawl over approximately 13,000 square feet. This accessible surface will be safe, yet fun for children of all abilities. New play features will include climbing areas of simulated rock, cables, ladders, interactive panels, slides, decks, swings, and swirlers. There will also be shade and a three-level tower that will allow children to climb and look out for miles.
Originally opened on March 6, 1992, Mary Heads Carter Park sits on 12.3 acres of land and currently includes a paved parking area, restrooms, a picnic pavilion and playground. The park is named after a local school teacher who greatly supported the parks system and believed that every child should have a park close enough where they could play. City Staff and the City Council has worked hard to continue expanding and improving Carrollton’s parks.
On Tuesday, November 5, the City Council authorized $500,000 for the purchase and installation of new playground equipment. A team from the community, along with City staff, has reviewed proposals, and visited sites across the Metroplex. They met with playground manufacturers and combed through catalogs to find new, challenging, interactive, and fun playground features. We Build Fun will be constructing the project with playground equipment by Miracle™.
Demolition has begun and construction will follow in February or March. The community will be invited to the grand opening this spring to celebrate this exciting, new addition to our growing parks system.
