Service History, Stateside or Abroad: Jefferson Barracks, Missouri; CTD College Training Detachment, Alvion, Michigan; Air Corp Base-San Antonio, Texas; Sioux Fallls, South Dakota (Radio School); Yuma, Arizona(Gunnery); Pueblo, Colorado (Crew Training); Topeka, Kansas (Air Craft Assignment); North Africa, Tripoli and Genoa, Italy (Combat Duty). The 459th Bombardment Group was one of a number of B-24 Liberator groups assigned to the 15th Air Force flying out of Italy in 1944 and 1945. Base a Giulia Air Field the 459th BG a member of the 304th Bombardment Wing flew missions in Italy, France, the Balkans, Austria and Germany. From their time in theater they only had two commanders, Colonels Marden M. Munn and Henry K. Mooney. The 459th Bombardment group received a Distinguished Unit Citation for leading the 304th Wing through enemy interceptors and intense flak to raid and airfield and aircraft assembly plant at Bad Voslau on 23 April 1944. During combat the group also flew some support and interdictory missions. Struck railroads in Mar 1944 to cut enemy supply lines leading to the Anzio beachhead. Participated in the pre-invasion bombing of Southern France in August 1944. Hit railroad bridges, depots, and marshaling yards during April 1945 to assist Allied forces in Northern Italy. Returned to the US in August.
