General Information

A permit is required for retaining walls four feet (4') or greater in height, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, or which support a surcharge.

Retaining walls that face or have exposure to any public thoroughfare (excluding alleys) shall be veneered with brick or stone.

Inspections

City staff does not inspect retaining walls. The design engineer shall perform an inspection of the retaining wall during construction and provide a letter stating that the wall was constructed in accordance with the construction documents. That letter shall be uploaded to the permit application on the CityServe Portal in order to complete and close out the permit.
