City Presents Environmental Distinction Awards
Carrollton, Texas – The City of Carrollton Environmental Services Department recognizes industries that have consistently complied with industrial pretreatment regulations for a full year, and awarded the Environmental Distinction Award to industries that have stepped up their pollution prevention operations and environmental leadership. The eighth annual Environmental Distinction Award was presented to BeautiControl and Sara Lee Refrigerated Dough Products during the December 7, 2010 City Council meeting. Each of these companies were not only consistently compliant, but they have achieved considerable progress in their environmental sustainability programs.
BEAUTICONTROL, manufactures and distributes cosmetics and beauty products.
Their commitment to environmental excellence is demonstrated within their operations, behavior, and environmental performance record. BeautiControl distinguishes itself by its strong pollution control and prevention initiatives. To name a few: the diversion of landfill waste to a composting process, a just-in-time inventory practice and, totally converting its janitorial supplies to “green products.” In 2009 BeautiControl recycled 99.4% of their generated wastes.

SARA LEE REFRIGERATED DOUGH PRODUCTS, which has been in Carrollton since 1968, is a leading manufacturer of refrigerated dough products in North America. Sara Lee is committed to supporting sustainable, economic and environmental improvements in the community. They have undergone a lean transformation through waste reduction, inventory and utility usage. Sara Lee has instituted a “dry cleaning” process of their production lines which has significantly reduced their water usage. In recent years, Sara Lee has reduced their impact on landfills by capturing scrap dough and sending it for conversion to livestock feed. This process diverts approximately 18 truckloads of waste from landfill disposal each month.

The recipients of the Environmental Distinction Award are selected by a committee comprised of Environmental Services staff and a City Council representative. As the only awards program in the Metroplex where council is involved and where the award recipients are recognized in a public meeting, the Council members showed their commitment to actively encourage industry partners towards environmental quality and sustainability. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality acknowledges this award as being a noteworthy program that recognizes industries for their continued compliance and provides incentives for sustaining environmental excellence.
The following companies have been consistently compliant in meeting the requirements of the Industrial Pretreatment Program for the 2009-2010 Pretreatment year: Advent Cleaning Technologies, BeautiControl, Century Products, Electroplate Circuitry, Environmentally Friendly Coaters, General Aluminum, Image Industries, International Paper, Quality Powder Coating, QuikTrip Store #930 and Sara Lee Refrigerated Dough Products.
