The City of Carrollton will hold a flag raising ceremony at City Hall at 10am on Wednesday, June 19 in honor of Juneteenth. Also known as Emancipation Day or Freedom Day, Juneteenth celebrates the end of slavery in the United States. President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in 1863 and the Juneteenth celebration began in Galveston in 1865 when federal troops arrived to confirm the end of slavery. Freed slaves held their first celebrations in 1866, and Juneteenth has been celebrated annually on June 19 throughout the United States. Texas became the first state to make Juneteenth an official holiday in 1979. The day was declared an official federal holiday in 2021, and was the first new federal holiday since Martin Luther King Jr. Day was officially designated in 1983.
