Take the First Step to a Healthier Denton County

  • Date: 04/24/2010
March 9, 2010- Denton County Health Department is sponsoring the 3rd annual “Take the First Step” 5K/1Mile Fun Run/Walk Event on Saturday, April 24 at South Lakes Park in Denton, Texas. (event brochure/event flyer & entry form pdf format)

DCHD would like to encourage all residents to lower their risk for cardiovascular disease, the number one killer of Denton County residents, by participating in consistent physical activity. “Take the First Step” is an event that encourages residents to engage in physical activity as a means to improve their health and reduce their risks of cardiovascular disease. This free community event is stroller and pet-friendly with free t-shirts provided on a first come, first serve basis with advanced registration. DCHD invites active residents to attend in support of increased awareness of the risk reduction strategies for cardiovascular disease. Less active residents are encouraged to use this as a first step to becoming active.

Approximately 61.5% of Denton County residents are overweight. About a third of adults have high cholesterol and nearly 18% have high blood pressure. These cardiovascular disease risk factors can be prevented or controlled with regular physical activity and balanced eating. It’s time for Denton County to GET UP, GET OUT, and GET ACTIVE!

Registration for the event will be through Betsy Haggard at betsy.haggard@dentoncounty.com or 940-349-2922. Registration forms can be found at www.dentoncounty.com/health by clicking on the “Take the First Step” link. Event packet pick-up will be on Thursday, April 22 from 8 am to 8 pm or Friday, April 23 from 8 am to 5 pm at Denton County Health Department located at North Loop 288 Denton, TX 76209. The race will begin at 8 am.

It is our hope that the “Take the First Step” event will be a springboard into a healthier lifestyle for all participants. Denton County Health Department offers many programs to assist you with becoming and staying healthy. Please visit our website at www.dentoncounty.com/health.

This event is fun, free, and healthy. We encourage every one of all ages, abilities, and fitness levels to participate. Friendly, leashed-pets are welcome.
