After years of fighting for Europe in the trenches of World War 1, Tom Sherbourne is finally able to return to his home in Australia. Tired after years of fighting, Tom and Isabel, his wife, decide to go live in a lighthouse far away from civilization and they live there happily for quite a while. When a baby washes onto shore in a lifeboat, Isabel and Tom decide to keep and raise the child; however, they must ultimately travel back to the mainland after they discover that people who care for the child may still be alive.
