As emergency care providers, Carrollton Telecommuincations Dispatchers are responsible for the health and well-being of those living, working and visiting the City of Carrollton and are crucial to the operations of the Carrollton Police and Fire Departments.  Telecommunications Dispatchers process Police, Fire and emergency medical services-related calls.  Learn more about how to apply and our training program below.

In order to apply or express interest in a Telecommunications position, please log into the City of Carrollton Career Center website and create a Career Profile, selecting any position of interest. When a job posting is opened, you will be notified by e-mail of the job posting as long as your career profile is active.

Application Process
All applications must be submitted utilizing the City of Carrollton Career Center website.  If there is not an active job posting for Telecommunications Dispatcher, you may complete a personal profile. When a job opening becomes available, you will be emailed to notify you of the job posting.

The testing and evaluation process may take several weeks. Please be patient and do not be discouraged. The most qualified applicants will advance to the next evaluation phase after the Telecommunications Manager has reviewed results. Not every applicant will move forward. Candidate evaluation will follow the listed process:

  • Criti-Call computer screening – Includes basic computer skills, data entry test and standard typing test
  • Select, Inc. Performance Assessment
  • Background investigation
  • Panel interview

Selected candidates will be offered employment, conditional upon successfully completing the following:

  • Polygraph test
  • Psychological screen
  • Drug screen

Shift Work
Dispatchers bid for shifts every six months in February and August. Bidding is done by seniority, based on date of hire, for shifts that consist of working five 8-hour shifts. Schedules are subject to approval and change by the Telecommunications Manager to suit the needs of the section.

IMPORTANT:  Each employee MUST have the flexibility for shift work, as well as weekend hours and holidays. 

Training
Successful Telecommunications Dispatcher applicants will attend and complete on-the-job training which involves classroom training, hands-on training with a trainer, as well as ride-a-longs with Police and Fire personnel. Dispatchers must master several phases of training in order to pass probation.

Training topics include: How to process in-coming 9-1-1 and administrative calls for service, geography, Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) functions, radio dispatching and terminology and procedures, map reading, use of law enforcement databases, monitoring and tracking Police and Fire personnel on the radio and more.

In addition, there are several certifications that must be obtained during training in order to access and utilize the law enforcement databases required for the job and to provide Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), pre-arrival medical protocols a Dispatcher uses to assist callers with emergency medical situations.

A trainee will begin to work independently in the dispatch center once they have successfully completed all areas of the training program as determined by a value based scoring system recorded on daily observation reports. Training is worked on all shifts to provide trainees the opportunity to master the types of requests made on each shift.

The probationary time for a trainee is ten months from the date of hire.
