Carrollton Reports Positive Mosquito Trap; Commences Ground Spraying

Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) has confirmed 2 mosquito traps testing positive for spray rigWest Nile Virus (WNV) in Carrollton. These traps were collected from mosquito management areas 3A and 5A. Mosquito management area 3A is located between Highway 121, Hebron Parkway, Old Denton Drive and Rosemeade Parkway. Mosquito management area 5A is located between President George Bush Turnpike, Josey Lane, Frankford Road and Interstate 35. These areas can be viewed in greater detail at The City of Carrollton conducts mosquito trapping in seven areas of the city each week of the mosquito season, April-September, and has collected a total of 105 samples so far this year.

Carrollton Animal Services will conduct ground-based spraying in the neighborhoods outlined above, weather permitting, today and tomorrow, August 3 and 4, at approximately 9:00 p.m. until completed. Spraying will not be conducted in the event of wind speeds in excess of 10 mph or inclement weather.

Scott Hudson, Environmental Services Director, encourages citizens to practice the ‘4Ds’ to reduce the risk of WNV:

  • DEET All Day, Every Day: Whenever you’re outside, use insect repellants that contain DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • DRESS: Wear long, loose, and light-colored clothing outside.
  • DRAIN: Remove all areas of standing water in and around your home.
  • DUSK & DAWN: Limit outdoor activities during dusk and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active.
