Carrollton Reports Positive Mosquito Trap; Commences Ground Spraying
Posted Date: 8/31/2015 7:00 AM

Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS) has confirmed the twelfth mosquito trap testing positive for West Nile virus (WNV) in Carrollton for this mosquito season. The most recent traps were collected from mosquito management areas 2A, 3A, and 7A. Area 2A is located between Old Denton Road, Hebron Parkway, and the northern City limits. Area 3A is located between Olspray rigd Denton Road, Hebron Parkway, Frankford Road, and IH-35. Area 7A is located between Josey Lane, Belt Line Road, Keller Springs Road, and Broadway Street. These areas can be viewed in greater detail at cityofcarrollton.com/westnile. The City of Carrollton conducts mosquito trapping in seven areas of the city each week of the mosquito season, April-September, and has collected a total of 133 samples so far this year. Although we are 4-5 weeks away from the end of this year’s season it is still very important to take appropriate precautions to protect yourself.

Carrollton Animal Services will conduct ground-based spraying in the neighborhood outlined above, weather permitting, Monday, August 31 and Tuesday, September 1, commencing around 9:00 p.m. until completed. Spraying will not be conducted in the event of wind speeds in excess of 10 mph or inclement weather.

Scott Hudson, Environmental Services Director, encourages citizens to practice the ‘4Ds’ to reduce the risk of WNV:

  • DEET All Day, Every Day: Whenever you’re outside, use insect repellants that contain DEET, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • DRESS: Wear long, loose, and light-colored clothing outside.
  • DRAIN: Remove all areas of standing water in and around your home.
  • DUSK & DAWN: Limit outdoor activities during dusk and dawn hours when mosquitoes are most active.

Contact Carl Shooter, Animal Services Manager at (972) 466-3421 or visit cityofcarrollton.com/westnile for more information regarding the City of Carrollton’s response to this positive sample result.
