20-30% of calories eaten each day should come from fat. Fat provides energy, makes up your hormones, and provides insulation and protection for your organs. There are three types of fats:

  1. Saturated fats: Saturated fats come from animal products and should be less than 10% of the fat in your diet.
  2. Unsaturated fats: Monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are the "healthy" fats. They come from plant products such as avocados, nuts, and olive or canola oil.
  3. Trans fats: Trans fats come from processed snacks, shortening, baked goods, and stick margarines. This sort of fat should be avoided completely.
